Nobody wants your stories to stay in a box. Why not share them with the world?

All accepted submissions (stories and comics) will be published in a free epub magazine with issues coming out twice a year. The distribution is wide, the magazine available to everyone. Selected stories and comics will also be published on our web page.

We accept submissions from authors writing in English. We accept only previously unpublished works, unless you are submitting an English translation of a story originally published in another language. Submitted comics do not have to include any text.

Please note that *at this time we do not translate fiction into Croatian*. All accepted submissions will be published in the language in which they were submitted.

Submitted work need to fall somewhere on the speculative fiction spectrum (science fiction, fantasy, horror and everything in between). We do not accept poetry.

We accept simultaneous submission but please inform us if your work has been accepted elsewhere so we might remove it from consideration. We don’t accept multiple submissions, you can apply with only one story or one comic.

Once your work is accepted for publication, there may be editorial feedback and interventions. By submitting to us you agree to receiving editorial feedback.

You might have to wait up to 30 days after the end of submissions period to receive an acceptance/rejection e-mail.

Submit your work along with a short professional bio (up to 100 words in length) at: morinakutija@gmail.com with the subject line: [open call], [story/comic title], [author name].

Stories:

1. Length: from 100 words to 30 000 words. Prose works over the upper word limit will not be considered.
2. Submit in .docx format.
3. Use Times New Roman, 12 points.
4. Margines: 1 inch.
5. Numerate pages for easier reading.
6. For separators use three asterisks ***

Comics:

1. Length: 1 to 8 pages. Only standalones (no serialization).
2. Size: 20.5 cm width and 27.6 cm height.
3. Formats: JPG or PNG. RGB or grayscale. A minimum resolution of 300dpi.

Please note: we are not interested in AI generated stories or comics and will not be taking any such works into consideration. Should we discover you have submitted such work, we will immediately remove it from competition.

Morina kutija is once again open for submissions, so send us your short fiction and comics. As before, your submissions can be on any theme but this issue will also feature a special theme: secret ingredient. Approach this in any way you feel inspired to; treat it literally such as in stories where a secret ingredient plays a pivotal role like magical potions in fantasy, mysterious chunks of meat in horror or strange powdered foodstuffs from a dystopian future; and let’s not even mention mushrooms in all their myriad forms across the width and breadth of speculative fiction. Or you could go metaphorical and symbolic, such as in stories that concern themselves with the secretive and invisible elements making up a relationship or power structure. Stories about food, hunger, cannibalism, consumerism or something completely different… No matter which way you decide to tackle it, we’re looking forward to reading your submissions. The only prerequisite is that your stories or comics are within the genre of science fiction, fantasy, horror or any combination thereof.

Please note: we’re a fan run Croatian online publication and currently completely on a volunteer basis from the editors to the writers. The magazine is completely free to read and doesn’t generate any profit. After the publication you are free to do whatever you want with your work.
