Balkan Tragedies: Open Call For Short Stories and Comics

Last year’s summer issue asked you to submit your stories and comics on the theme of Slavs don’t believe in heroes. This time, for Morina kutija, no. 7, we have an even hotter theme for this increasingly hotter climate change era: “Balkan tragedies”.

Interpret it any way your inspiration wishes. Humorous, satirical or serious, we only care that your submitted stories and comics be speculative fiction: fantasy, science fiction or horror. Take us on a tour of our urban spaces or quaint villages, use Balkan cultures and history to build a fantasy world or a distant future. Will it be enough if you just submit something dark and crushingly depressing, its mood raw enough to choke us? If you’re an author from the Balkans, we’ll consider it as keeping to the theme.

But if you don’t really feel “balkan tragedies”, we’ll gladly consider your stories and comics about anything else, as long as it’s speculative fiction.

Stories should be between 100 words and 30 000 words, comics 1 or 2 pages. Comics can be color or grayscale. Please submit only a single story or comic (no multiple submissions). For all details regarding formatting of both stories and comics please check the Submissions page.

Submit your works at: morinakutija@gmail.com. Please use subject line: Balkan tragedies, [Title], [Author name]

Submission deadline: May 2nd, 2024. at 23:59.

We accept simultaneous submission but please inform us if your work has been accepted elsewhere so we might remove it from consideration. We publish only original works. We make exceptions solely for stories translated into English that were originally published in Croatian or one of the languages mutually intelligible with Croatian (Bosnian, Serbian, and Montenegrin)—we will consider them because we wish to help the story reach an audience that doesn’t speak our local languages.

Once your work has been published in Morina kutija, you’re free to republish it elsewhere.

Please note that we’re not interested in AI generated work so we don’t accept AI generated stories or comics. In case that we learn that you used generative AI on your work, we’re going to disqualify it from consideration.

We hope you’ll find the theme fun and inspirational. We’re looking forward to your submissions!

Morina kutija is an online speculative fiction magazine publishing two issues per year. Our next issue is currently planned for September 2024. Six issues have been published so far and are available for free download from our web page or from Smashwords. The magazine has also spun off into Mora FM, a Croatian language podcast about writing and publishing speculative fiction, available through Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast, and other platforms. We have a YouTube channel where we discuss books and have online book clubs. Send all queries to morinakutija@gmail.com. Follow us at @morinakutija on Instagram and Facebook. Please note that we’re primarily a Croatian publication so that’s our main language.
